God speaks to us in many ways. I’ve found that it’s often through the things that we enjoy. If your passion is art, God will speak to you through pictures. If you’re a writer, it’s often through the words of others that you find inspiration, encouragement and teaching. God often speaks to me through examples in creation and through songs. I’ll be praying about something and realize there’s a song in my mind that’s telling me what to do or reminding me of God’s faithfulness to see me through.

Many people struggle to receive God’s unconditional love, even if they were raised in a loving, Christian home. This has been one of my biggest battles over that last several years. It is in those times of questioning God’s love for me, I often hear a secular love song in my mind. It may only be the chorus, but sometimes when I looked it up, the whole song could be God singing to me. God sings to me things like:

Make a list, baby
Of
the things I’ll do for you
Ain’t no risk, now,
In lettin my
love rain down on you,
So we could wash away the past,
So that we may start anew

And I’m gonna keep on lovin you
Cause it’s the only thing I wanna do
I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin you

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Recenlty while praying for a girl I know through the youth at Church, I heard Billy Joel’s “I Love You Just the Way You Are“. No man can make promises like I’m “never gonna say goodbye”. But God can! And He’ll keep on loving us, not matter how horrible we feel or how distant He seems. Sometimes I’ve even found myself singing a song back to Him. One of my favorites is “When You Say You Love Me” as recorded by Josh Groban.
